ACT Applying for Drug Free Communities Funding

The Alliance for Community Transformations (ACT) is a part of the Bennington Country Regional Commissionís Healthy Community Design program. ACT was originally housed at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) and with continued support from SVMC, ACT has joined BCRC to focus on programs that support healthy communities. Ongoing projects are dealing with developing walkable streets, access to fresh healthy food, and improving recreational opportunities. ACT also works on substance abuse prevention and youth empowerment and is applying to the federal Drug Free Communities Program.

The Drug Free Communities Program is administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and provides $125,000 a year (renewable for up to ten years) to community organizations to implement drug prevention efforts. ACT is working with HAYC3 (a Hoosick Falls based community organization) through a mentoring grant to apply for the larger grant. HAYC3 is finishing its ninth year of funding under the Drug Free Communities Program and has received a mentoring grant of $75,000 to help ACT prepare to apply. A dedicated group of individuals has been meeting weekly to write this grant. The grant is due on March 18th with award notification by late August. While the grant cannot fund physical infrastructure changes it will provide the resources for greater collaboration among the many agencies in Bennington that want to improve the town and will enable new programs to be implemented.
